A lot of ink has been spilled covering the lives of history's most influential figures, but how much of the forest is lost for the trees? In Charles River Editors' American Legends series, listeners can get caught up to speed on the lives of America's most important men and women in the time it takes to finish a commute, while learning interesting facts long forgotten or never known.

The "Golden Age" of television was in part so named because it was the era in which new technology was pioneered and industry rules were still being written. Here was a fascinating new medium, founded by executives with no previous body of experience, and a myriad of directions in which to proceed. Numerous factions spent the next generation wresting control over content and the content/product relationship. Some envisioned a public service and educational medium, while others sought sophisticated entertainment. With profit as the determining motive, executives and sponsors sought only what would evoke the most lucrative response.

The term "Golden Age" also applies to the reality that much of the television programming in the 1950s was offered up as live performance, a dangerous and exciting time for both writers and actors. As pioneer director John Frankenheimer put it, "There were no old days. We were the old days." Frankenheimer went on to associate with one of the age's best and most prolific TV writers, Rod Serling, an enduring name in the realm of philosophical fright and ironic reflections of human injustice.

American Legends The Life of Rod Serling (Audible Audio Edition) Kenneth Ray Charles River Editors Books

I really enjoyed this book American Legends: the Life of Rod Sterling. I knew he was the writer behind the TV programs the Twilight Zone and Night Gallery. Yet there was so much more to him for example he wrote the very first screenplay about Planet of the Apes (which was revised by several other writers). The book was definitely concise and somewhat brief. Nevertheless, I learned that he served in World War II in the Pacific, he was a paratrooper and among other awards received the Bronze Star. There so many facts about his life in this book that I do not want to spoil other readers opportunities to learn about why he created the Twilight Zone. I would just say that the Twilight Zone provided him the opportunity to write about topics he believed in using fiction where he could avoid the rewriting of the network, advertisers and sensors. I highly recommend this book.

American Legends The Life of Rod Serling (Audible Audio Edition) Kenneth Ray Charles River Editors Books Reviews

If you watched any TWILIGHT ZONE episodes then you recognize the theme song up there beside the four star review. This entertaining little book will at the very least bring back memories of some of those old shows. I mean.......WHO KNEW....the airplane passenger watching the creature dismantle the wing was a young Bill Shatner. Get the book, it's a good read.
This is a truncated, inaccurate, inarticulate biography of writer Rod Serling. It lumbers along with brief, muddled biographical tidbits straight out of Wikipedia and gives no insight into the life and writing of Serling. It is badly written and contains numerous factual error that can be checked easily, such as titles of Twilight Zone Episodes.
I got this book free as a Prime book and I didn't get my money's worth.
A very interesting look at the TV management system from the early days and its effect on true talent.
A short but interesting look at the life of Rod Sterling.
Absolutely terrific to know and understand one of the most groundbreaking and barrier crushing screenwriters of the time.
Much to know about this legendary writer.
More of an outline of what he wrote and when. Save your money and look for something that wasn't written overnight.
